Joel Henriod is a litigator in the firm’s Appellate Practice Group. He has written or co-authored briefs in over 250 appeals, resulting in more than 50 reported opinions, in various areas of law ranging from catastrophic personal injury to commercial and public-sector disputes such as mining regulation, taxation, contracts, and election law. He frequently argues before the Nevada Supreme Court and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Joel has garnered particular notoriety for expertise in perfecting records for appeal by embedding with trial teams to handle legal issues and consult on trial strategy. He is the “go-to lawyer” for overseeing mission-critical motions in limine, special jury instructions, trial briefs, and post-judgment motions, with an eye toward both persuading the trial court and preserving issues for appeal.
Joel rose to prominence swiftly. By his fifteenth year (2018), among other accolades, he already had been ranked three times in the “Top 100 Lawyers” of Mountain States Super Lawyers (encompassing ID, NV, MT, UT, and WY) and was listed in The Best Lawyers in America. In 2019, he was inducted into the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers in his first year of eligibility. (Nationally, fewer than 400 lawyers and judges can claim membership in this organization.) That year, Joel also received the “Lawyer of the Year Award” from the Las Vegas Defense Lawyers—even though he occasionally represents personal injury plaintiffs—in recognition that his appeals have advanced Nevada’s caselaw, that trial teams have achieved stellar results when he collaborates, and that his dedication to winning is matched only by his high ethical standards, professionalism, and good humor.
Prior to law school, Joel volunteered at various orphanages in Romania and translated for American surgeons (Operation Smile) at the Bucharest Children’s Hospital.
